Basketball : a crazy week in review

Boys Varsity Basketball

vs. BWL, 42-46
vs. Calhoun, 41-32
In their home opener this Monday, the Boys Varsity Basketball team suffered a heartbreaking loss to their league rival BWL. After a low-scoring first quarter, which finished with LFNY trailing BWL 4-2, both teams stepped it up a notch, scoring more points in the second quarter. A run in the third quarter led largely by team captains Max and Gaetan had the Lynx up by seven at their peak. However, BWL regrouped and, in the fourth quarter, came out firing and took the lead.
In the wake of their loss to BWL, the Lynx walked onto the Calhoun Cougar’s court on Thursday with determination and eagerness. Following the coaches’s instructions to start strong, our players followed with a strong first quarter and solid lead. Elliott R. and his Lynx teammates played strong defense, not allowing the Cougars to reach double digits in the first eight minutes of play. The second and third quarters also went the Lycée’s way, as they continued to show their determination to never be confronted to the feelings they felt Monday night… The Cougars fought to overcome the Lynx’s lead and despite some scary moments were not able to prevail. The Lynx left the Upper West Side recognizing that it was a great win, but that there is still a lot of work to be done.

Girls Varsity Basketball

vs LREI, 18-28
vs Garden School, 38-36
During the last week of November the Varsity Girls Basketball Team had two league games and finished with a win and a loss. During their first game against LREI, the team started off with an excellent first quarter, leading 9-2. The second quarter was tougher for us. Our jump shots weren’t going in. We did play excellent defense, only allowing LREI to score 6 points. During the second half we had a hard time scoring points. The final score was 28-18, and I am still very pleased with our performance in the first half.
Our second league game of the season was against the Garden School in Queens, and it was one of the best games I have ever coached! The score was neck and neck for the entire four quarters. At no point in the game was Garden or LFNY up by more than 6 points. Our pattern so far this season seems to be starting strong, as we scored 13 points at the end of the first quarter. Ten of those points were scored by Jessica B., our star forward. One of my main goals as head coach is to start strong, as this sets the tempo for the rest of the game. If we play together, communicate on offense and defense and score baskets we will not only be successful, but show the other team we mean business and are here to win.
We won by two points in the last 30 seconds of the game with a final score of 38-36!
I am very proud of my team as they showed up to play and their victory proved to me they can fight to the end.

JV Girls Basketball

vs. Hewitt, 19-21

Our first game was… crazy. We came in confident and tried to play our best. Our defense worked well, but our attack was not as good. We had great team spirit, and the fans who came out to see us play were really encouraging. We always had the support of our schoolmates even though we were losing, which made us believe that we still had a chance at winning. We tried our best. We may have been aggressive (we ended up with about 16 fouls and a player who had fouled out), but we defended our court, team and school. We represent the French community, and we managed to show the Hewitt girls team how strong we really are. Now, they may have won this battle, but we haven’t lost the war. We will win. That’s the mentality of our team. This game has opened our eyes. We will do better. 1…2…3… LYCEE!
