The Lycée’s annual Spring Fair will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2019. This year’s theme is Harry Potter! Led by Co-Chairs Stephanie Bismuth and Houda Ghadouani, the committee of parent volunteers has been working hard to plan a magical event. At the Lycée on Saturday you will find Harry, Ron, and Hermione, Platform 9¾, the four Hogwarts houses, the Golden Snitch, and more!
But Hogwarts is not the only school of magic around. Have you heard of Wizlingual? This semester, students in CM1A created their own magical school, Wizlingual. They created four houses named after magical creatures and made a video showcasing the school and different magic classes that can be taken there. You can watch the video here.
The Spring Fair team stopped by the CM1A classroom last week to chat with the students/wizards and learn a little more about Wizlingual. At the Spring Fair, you can check out the Wizlingual booth for yourself in the 76th Street Lobby to learn all about the school and even learn a spell!
Spring Fair Team: What is Wizlingual?
Gem: Wizlingual is a bilingual school that can teach you magic and how to use it.
How did you come up with the name Wizlingual for your school?
Louie: We did it all together. We brainstormed, our teacher wrote down all the ideas for us and then we decided on our favorite. One of the ideas was Witchlingual, and from there we came up with Wizlingual.
Where is Wizlingual located?
Gem: Wizlingual is located above Malibu, California in a cloud. You get there by going into Rockefeller Center. You go in an elevator that takes you all the way up to the sky to the cloud.
What kind of creatures can you find in the Wizlingual world?
Nael: You can find creatures that we invented. We invented names and animals for the different houses, Jagulaw, Wolfindor, Pantheroar, and Draguifort.
How did you come up with the names of the houses?
Louie: We chose multiple people for each house and then they worked together to name their group.
How did you choose the characteristics for each house?
Priya: Every group has a few characteristics. We chose them with our group and decided on them together.
Which house are you in?
Priya: Jagulaw.
Mason: Pantheroar.
Is there a characteristic of your house that you identify with the most?
Joseph: I’m in Wolfindor. The characteristics are brave, respectful, and just. I am respectful and just.
Nelissa: I’m in Draguifort. I’m fearless.
Can you teach us a Wizlingual spell?
Joseph: There’s a spell that makes you not be able to move–“Stupify.” You can use it when someone’s annoying you. You can do it to them and they can’t move.
What was your favorite part of the whole project?
Louie: Doing the movie. We wrote a script for it, went to the Media Lab and filmed all of the different parts, and then combined everything.
Élotie: Making the movie to explain what every group did to help build the castle, like magic classes, spells. We were inspired by Harry Potter. We had a plants class and talked about the castle and where it was built.
Mason: Doing spells. My favorite spell is “Gemino,” which is when you multiply something. We did it with the ipads and glue sticks, and you can do it with anything. If I could do the spell on anything, I would do it on a Playstation.
Nelissa: Inventing different animals and making the movie about it. My favorite creature is the Doublis Mermaid. She has two heads and she’s very tall, 6 feet tall. She can heal people and she lives in the ocean.
Thank you to CM1A for teaching us about the amazing world of Wizlingual! It’s going to be a magical Spring Fair with the Wizlingual booth and all of the Harry Potter fun! Learn more about the event and register for activities at www.lfny.org/springfair.
