Friday: Kindergarten students (GSA) performed their own lively version of the fairytale The Three Little Pigs in front of their families.
Thursday: Two fourth-grade classes visited the Colonial Dames Headquarters House to see how early Dutch settlers traveled to America and lived in New Amsterdam. The students tried on period costumes and learned to dance the minuet. (credit photo: G. Bordereau)
Thursday: Poetry fills the Lycée every year at this time for Poem in your Pocket Day. Students roamed around the school and recited poems in English, in French and even in Latin to other students, teachers and staff. Written poems were also hung around the school. Wednesday: Gymnastics coach Alexandra Brevet gives her students some advice as they just finish their performances on the balance beam during a competition held at the Lycée. They will be going on the floor next.
Wednesday: Tenth, eleventh and twelfth graders watched the documentary “Too Black to Be French” about racial discrimination as part of a program on diversity. The viewing was followed by a discussion groups in class. During that time, students debriefed about the documentary and debated about ways to combat racial and ethnic discrimination.
Wednesday: Director of Service Learning and former math teacher Vivianne Kurzweil reads words for the students to spell, as part of the annual Spelling Bee competition. The excitement is palpable in the room as 6th graders encourage their classmates on stage.
Tuesday: 60 college admissions officers attended the Fête Française, an annual student-run event. Students created the costumes and decorations to introduce admissions officers to what makes the Lycée (and its students) unique. This year’s theme was America’s Francophonie: Louisiana. It is a great opportunity for the 11th-grade students to get to know the colleges, and for the colleges to get to know them.
Tuesday: A dozen of students from Argentina are currently visiting the LFNY for almost two weeks, staying with Lycée families. Their stay combines a mix of classes at the LFNY and sightseeing in NYC. Here, they are in a tenth-grade Spanish class with students who are learning the language for the first time and are exchanging about what they like.
Monday: This group of sixth graders took their lunch-hour in the art room on Monday, where they created Venetian masks to the sounds of chamber music in honor of Italian Day at the Lycée. Timed with the feast of St. Mark in Italy, the celebration of all things Italian also included a special menu of eggplant parmagiana in the school cafeteria. Delizioso!
