Week in Pictures: April 11-15

Day of Silence-29Friday: A student shares her feedback after taking part in the Day of Silence, a national initiative that brings attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools. 55 students from 9th to 12th grades took a vow of silence to illustrate the silencing effect of bullying and harassment on LGBT students and those perceived to be LGBT.

MSA Dragons-8Friday: These pre-K students continue on their unit about Fairy Tales by creating a dragon to be displayed in the Primary Library beginning on Friday for the annual Fête de La Rose. This student is working on the dragon’s eyes with the help of a volunteer parent. Students work alone or in pairs using glue, glitter, water paint, scissors and markers.

French Play - Le Bal-38Thursday: For this year’s edition of the French Play, the students of l’Atelier théâtre performed “Le Bal“, inspired by Ettore Scola’s film, which tells the history of France from 1936 to 2016 through the story of a bal populaire. There was no dialogue, only dance and music. The play highlights relationships between men and women, teenagers and their parents, naziism, war, AIDS, terrorism… events that are a part of our history and of our collective memory. Students PresentationWednesday: Two second graders crossed over to the Secondary School building to present their work on fairy tales to their older peers in the sixth grade, as part of work to foster collaboration among students across grades. Here, they are about to read their story, as teacher Anne Santos stands by their side.

Puppet-43Tuesday: These eleventh-grade theater elective students are retelling the tale of Pinocchio using a puppet under the supervision of choreographer and puppeteer Patti Bradshaw. Manipulating the puppet requires three people: one for the head and the left arm, one for the right arm, and one for the feet. The puppeteers have to pay careful attention to every detail and learn to transfer their acting – including their voice – onto the puppet. The final performances of the high-school’s  theater elective students will take place on May 17.

Museum Natural History-35Monday: Surrounded by hundreds of specimens of the first vertebrates, the entire tenth grade visited the American Museum of Natural History to study the evolution of living organisms throughout history. They were tasked with creating an e-book to show the connections between all living organisms and to illustrate the concept of natural selection using the example of the horse, which used to be a very small animal. The students also learned that the history of life on earth is very much connected with the history of the earth itself and that geological events can cause the extinction or the evolution of species (Text by Claire Lespinasse).
