Thursday: Y11 student Tanzil  wins 3rd prize for his interpretation of Henry V during the annual Shakespeare Competition for students in Y9 to Y12. 18 LFNYers delivered monologues from various Shakespeare plays to their peers and a panel of judges. The winner, Y11 student Marrec, will move on to the city-wide semi-final competition later this month.

untitled-28Tuesday:  Marieke van Woerkom, curriculum development consultant at Morningside Center for Teaching Social Responsibility, is working with tenth-grade advisors on social and emotional skills building. Here, they are examining teenage brain development and how developing strong social and emotional skills can help students calm down, think more clearly, problem solve and make better choices in life.

BlackHistoryMonth-8Monday: For Black History Month, Secondary students attended a performance on the theme “Women of Courage,” which looks into the lives of two women whose contributions and accomplishments are relevant to the tapestry of African-American history, Women’s Suffrage and the Civil Rights Movement. The woman in the picture plays Ida B. Wells, born a slave in Mississippi in 1862 and who fought to become an educated woman, first becoming a teacher and later a journalist, newspaper editor, woman’s suffragist and early leader in the civil rights movement.
