Friday afternoon the Varsity Girls and Boys basketball teams had a double header match-up versus their rival FASNY. Since my arrival at the Lycée this has always been the biggest game, as each French school puts forth their best effort to prove who is best. The winner gets bragging rights and the night to celebrate whereas the losing team hangs their heads low thinking about how they will beat them next year!
The Lady Lynx got possession of the ball from the tip-off and from that point on the game was in our favor. We began in a 2-3 zone defense and at one point switched to a 3-2 zone defense to try and make steals for fast-break opportunities. In the end, we finished in a 2-3 zone defense as FASNY did not have any shooters who were a threat to us.
Our team was led by 7th grade/5ème phenomenon, Clara D, who is in her first year at the Lycée, but has many years of experience playing basketball competitively. She scored a season high of 24 points followed by Senior Co-Captain Fiona P. who netted 10 points. To date, in 10 games, Clara has scored a total of 150 points, but who is counting anyway!!!
LFNY won the game with a final score of 40-26. I am very pleased with my team’s performance as everyone made a contribution, and I know how happy they were to defeat their rivals.
Victory for Varsity Boys too!
The LFNY Lynx Varsity Boys Basketball team started 2014 off on the right foot with a 48-35 victory over FASNY. After winning the league championship last year, the Lynx moved to a new division but still kept a rivalry game with their Westchester competitors, much to the delight of the packed house on Friday night. Led by Senior Gaetan M.’s 12 points, 13 rebounds, and 5 steals, the Lycee controlled much of the game.
Despite a small halftime lead, the team emerged calmer in the second half under the leadership of 11th-grader Oscar A., who had 3 assists, 3 steals and 11 second half points. After building a ten point lead, the energetic crowd helped the team closed out an easy victory with strong defensive performances from 11th-grader Kenan Z. and 10th-grader Lennart A., who each had two steals and grabbed eleven rebounds.
