L’économie et le journalisme à l’honneur au Lycée!

 

Dr. Duflo will visit the Lycée on Monday, December 10 from 8:15am to 10am (limited seating). She was named one of Time Magazine‘s 100 most influential people in the world in April, 2011, just after the release of her most recent book, Poor Economics, co-authored with Abhijit V. Banerjee. She will address the Y10, Y11, and Y12 students on poverty and development, as part of the conference series, “Celebrating Humanity Around the Globe,” sponsored by parents of the Lycée, Dr. Ghassan and Dr. Eileen O Reilly Abou-Alfa.

After studying at the Lycée Henri IV, Esther Duflo completed her undergraduate studies at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris in 1994. She received a master’s degree from DELTA in Paris (now, the Paris School of Economics) jointly with Ecole Normale Supérieure in 1995, and completed a PhD in Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1999.

She was appointed associate professor (with tenure) in 2002, at the age of 29, making her among the youngest faculty members at the Institute to be awarded tenure. Esther Duflo is Co-Founder and Director of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab, and Professor of Poverty Alleviation and Development Economics at the MIT. Her research focuses on microeconomic issues in developing countries.

That same day at 6:30pm , the Lycée welcomes Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, Jr. , publisher of The New York Times as part of our Global Citizenship Speakers series. Mr. Sulzberger will be interviewed by LFNY Alumna and parent, Magalie Laguerre-Wilkinson, who is associate producer for the legendary CBS newsmagazine,60 Minutes., They will discuss New Journalism in a Digital Age. Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, Jr. has been the publisher of The New York Times since 1992. He was named chairman of The New York Times Company in 1997. During his tenture, hehas led,among many accomplishments, the digital transformation of the Times Company which includes NYTimes.com, BostonGlobe.com, Boston.com  and IHT.com.

Sulzberger earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Tufts University in 1974. He was a reporter with The Raleigh Times from 1974 to 1976, and a London correspondent for The Associated Press from 1976-78. He joined The New York Times in 1978 as a correspondent in its Washington bureau. He moved to New York as a metro reporter in 1981 and was appointed assistant metro editor later that year. He is also a 1985 graduate of the Harvard Business School’s Program for Management Development. From 1983 to 1987, he worked in a variety of business departments, including production and corporate planning. In January 1987, he was named assistant publisher and, a year later, deputy publisher, overseeing the news and business departments.

As associate producer for 60 Minutes, Magalie Laguerre-Wilkinson has covered everything from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans to continuing coverage of the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti to the first exclusive interview French President Nicolas Sarkozy granted to an American news program.. Before joining 60 Minutes, Mrs. Laguerre-Wilkinson was a producer for NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw. Mrs. Laguerre-Wilkinson has lived in Haiti, France and the U.S.  She holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Marist College.
