Andy Warhol inspires the Lycée

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is hosting an exhibition, Regarding Warhol:  Fifty Years, Sixty Artists, from September-December 2012.  In conjunction with the exhibition, we learned about Andy Warhol’s life and his work.  Andy Warhol was one of the founders of American pop art, an art movement that challenged the traditions of fine art by using images from popular culture as subjects of art. Pop art idealized consumerism and mass production. Andy Warhol used images from advertising, the media, comic books, product labels, logos, and banal cultural objects in his art.  Some examples include his silkscreens of Campbell’s soup cans, Brillo boxes, and celebrities like Marilyn Monroe. Andy Warhol said that he wanted to remove the line between high art and the ordinary.

The 2nd graders (CE1) chose to paint characters from comic books as part of their pop-art study. See examples of their art work below:

The 4th graders (CM1) was also inspired by their visit to the Met :

Andy Warhol designed numerous album covers.  The 5th graders (CM2) chose to design album covers of their favorite bands as part of their study of pop art :
