Spring Fair Goes Under the Sea

On Saturday, May 12, the Lycée community will come together for Spring Fair. This year’s theme, “Under the Sea,” celebrates the beautiful diversity of life in our fair oceans. We’ll have plenty of activities for families and children of all ages. Spring Fair co-chairs and Primary parents, Houda Ghadouani and Stéphanie Bismuth, tell us all about it.

Why focus on the ocean at Spring Fair?

A celebration of the sea teeming with life sounded springy to us! We found inspiration and spirit from our winter gala, and especially the beautiful blue whale and the Hall of Biodiversity at the American Museum of Natural History, where it took place. Primary students will be working on decorations with fish, sharks and dolphins. We’re asking our own families to share photos and postcards of their favorite ocean-oriented memories, too!

Sounds like sustainability was also on your mind as you planned the event.

We’re seeing a lot more focus on the environment at school, and we wanted to capture that spirit. The APL’s Zero Waste and Sustainability Committee will host an environmental booth about their activities. And, we’re especially excited to be offering a screening of the movie Just Eat It, about food waste and food rescue.

Booths are a highlight at Spring Fair. What can we expect?

We’ll have 16 country booths this year, and we’re excited to have a few new countries in the mix: Russia, Canada, Reunion Island and the return of Brazil. You’ll find food, cultural artifacts and crafts at each booth. A lot of thought goes into each one, and we’re so grateful to all community members for coming forward and creating them!

Houda will have her Morocco booth again this year, and she is excited about the adult cooking class she’s planned in the Lycée kitchen. A Moroccan chef will come and teach a cooking class in tagines. The activity fee includes a clay tagine and all ingredients and spices. Families who sign up will be able to take home their tagine for dinner!

If you’re looking for more Lycée spirit wear, you’re in luck, too! The APL team will hold a special pop-up shop with Lycée hats, shirts, bags and even a few more plush toy baby Leos for purchase.

What activities do you have planned for children?

We’ll have plenty of activities for children, including art classes, science projects, sports activities, multiple dance style classes and crafts. The children will enjoy candy sushi making (raw fish felt a bit complicated for our fair…). The Primary science fair will return with lots of fun interactive activities. Children can make jewelry in the maker space, and, yes, we will have slime. Lots of it!

There’s a lot going on, and we’re still in need of volunteers to help during the day with volunteer and activity sign ups. Thanks so much. !
