Tanguy De Lamotte-47Thursday: French skipper Tangy De Lamotte gives 4th-grade students high fives in the marina North Cove where his boat “Initiatives Coeur” is docked. Two 4th-grade classes followed the 60 feet-long boat during the Transat Jacques Vabre back in October and were very eager to meet the skipper in person. The project was particularly exciting for the students and their teachers because the boat raises money for the charity Initiatives Coeur, which funds heart surgeries for children who can’t afford it.

cheers for volunteersThursday: Volunteers gathered for the annual “Cheers for Volunteers” end-of-year celebration, with inspiring and humorous words from Kiera Jekos, who leads parent volunteering for the APL, and head of school Sean Lynch. Did you hear the one about the penguins…?

Prix Litteraire-5Wednesday: Members of the Prix Littéraire Club, led by Isabelle Milkoff, vote on the 2016 award winners. Each year a jury of teachers, students and parents vote on their favorite French-language books for adults and for a special Junior Prix Littéraire in young adult fiction. Le Livre de Perle is on the junior short list this year, and its author, Timothée de Fombelle, will lead a fall artist in residence with our eighth graders.

Refugies-3Wednesday: Secondary students ask questions to Ninette Kelley, who directs the New York office of the UNHCR, during her presentation about the refugee crisis in the world today. The discussion is part of a kick off for a new student-run human rights club, created by 11th-grader Marwan. According to UNHCR, some 42,500 people are forcibly displaced from their homes each day because of conflict and persecution. 51% of all refugees are children under the age of 18.

Swimming_Kindergarten-27Tuesday: Kindergarteners don caps and swimsuits for their trimester-long PE swimming unit at a near-by pool. The students go by class and are divided in two groups by level with an average of three students per instructor. The students love their Tuesday mornings!

Gatsby Party-3Monday: Tenth graders tapped their knowledge of history, love of music and passion for F. Scott Fitzgerald in this annual celebration of The Great Gatsby. They played jazz, learned the Charleston and even enjoyed a little poker (in simulation!) all in honor of the classic of American literature. Never saw the sun shining so bright…
